HOW WE Serve

We celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day by making it a day of service, not just a day “off” from school. For the past eight years, many students, parents and teachers in our community spend MLK Day by volunteering in hands-on community service projects that benefit various charitable causes around Pittsburgh.

Among other efforts over the years, Shady Side volunteers have made blankets for hospital patients; played board games with veterans; stocked and organized shelves of canned goods at a food pantry; prepared meals for residents of a women’s shelter; and cleaned and decorated facilities at a camp for special needs children.

Shady Side educates children to become leaders of strong character, who value service and embrace diversity. Our students celebrate Shady Side’s guiding principles of honesty, kindness, responsibility, respect and safety – in serving the disadvantaged and in their daily interactions. Shady Side champions a curriculum that transforms students into responsible citizens who contribute their talents to improving communities around them.
